After we broke camp, we headed on south to Sabine NWR. The weather was terrible - windy and cold! We stopped at the Blue Goose trail first - kids and I walked a bit, then turned around and came back to the car. We entertained ourselves for about 45 minutes while Rod finished his hike. Then we went to the Wetland Walkway - fortunately by then it was a bit nicer. Rod found a Kingsnake and caught it with Charley in the pack on his back!
After here, we drove to Peveto Woods Audubon Sanctuary. While Rod birded, the kids and I played.
Then, we realized rather than drive to Holly or Martin Beach, we could access the beach right from the sanctuary!
When we finished up, we drove to Cameron, to spend the night. We had to cross a (VERY short) ferry to get there. We finally found a spot to eat about 20 minutes NE of Cameron, a local Cajun hotspot - a cultural experience! We spent the night at the only hotel in town. Then the next morning, drove to Rockefeller Refuge, and did the auto tour.
They are pretty good at entertaining themselves in the out of doors.
Then we stopped at Rutherford Beach. Not quite as nice as Peveto Beach, but we still enjoyed ourselves.
We spent another night in Cameron - the only supper option this night (on Sunday, when it was virtually a ghost town) was a Hunt Brothers Pizza from the gas station in town. Next morning - on to Cameron Prairie NWR. Boardwalk was neat.
Then on to Sam Houston Jones SP - A cypress swamp, where we would camp again the next 2 nights.
These are out of order... Day 1 - Stopped at Creole Nature Trail Adventure Point (starting point for the trail).

Both kids got sick - terrible coughs. Reed was super cranky. We decided to cut it a day short, and head north, with a stop in Alexandria at the zoo.
We wore him out.
